I am running for Moorhead City Council with a vision of a community where all can succeed and work in a culture that is accepting and inclusive. I am focusing on three major areas:
I want to make sure our schools and local businesses work together so students and people seeking jobs have what it takes to succeed. We can facilitate this with internships and professional experience.
I envision a Moorhead where everyone has a voice. I'll keep working on opening more opportunities that will let residents engage in decisions setting our city's path, whether through public forums or digital means.
Everyone needs a safe and secure place they can afford to live in. I will work with a range of housing options from rentals to homeownership and set policies that help address housing shortages by working with the community.
Zak Amin brings a diversity of experiences and commitments from the Iraqi Kurdistan region to Moorhead's City Council. With a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature, Zak spent eight years as a translator for the U.S. military police advisors in Iraq. Such work brought him a Special Immigrant Visa and the opportunity to move to Moorhead in 2015. As a husband and father of three boys—12, 8, and 3—Zak's experience in teaching Language Arts in Iraq has propelled him as a working member of the Moorhead community with a burning desire for service and inclusivity.
Since relocation to the U.S., Zak continued his education at Minnesota Community and Technical College, where he received an Associate Degree in Business and diplomas in Accounting Clerk and Payroll Specialist. He went on further to pursue his Master's Degree in Teaching ESL from Minnesota State University Moorhead.
His work experience includes being an administrative assistant for Moorhead Community Education and a program manager for the Kurdish American Development Organization. He currently teaches English Learners at Moorhead High School.
Zak's dedication to community service is shown through his work with KADO and as a community liaison. He has spent his years serving new Americans in advocating for jobs, housing, and schools.
His efforts were further recognized by the Moorhead Human Rights Award in 2023 and the Education Minnesota Human Rights Award in 2024.
